Cyclohexanone is a transparent oily liquid with the chemical formula C6H10O. This substance can be observed as a yellow to colorless liquid with a sharp odor.

It is soluble in water and miscible with common solvents. This compound is produced naturally and synthetically. It is found in small amounts in petroleum derivatives.

The natural type is found in crude oils. Additionally, it is excreted in human urine.

The synthetic type is produced in large quantities because it is extensively used in nylon production. Cyclohexanone is widely produced through two processes: oxidation and hydroxylation. Below are explanations of these processes:

  • Oxidation of cyclohexane: This substance is prepared in the presence of a cobalt catalyst in air.
  • Phenol hydrogenation: Cyclohexanone is first obtained from dry distillation of calcium pimelate and then prepared by Bouveault's dehydrogenation catalytic method.

Cyclohexanone adhesive, as it's named in the industry, is a type of adhesive that utilizes cyclohexanone in its formulation.
